The Government of India has decided to introduce the Cheetah, the only large carnivore species that went extinct in Independent India. The Cheetahs for release at selected sites in India have been sourced from the ancestral South African, Botswanan and Namibian cheetah populations. These sites were chosen based on the suitability and continued availability of the animals. This unique international endeavor will not only strengthen the efforts for global conservation of the Cheetah, but also will help in the re-establishment of this species in its historical range in India.
